a media experience

The time was when asuu the union of lecturers in Nigeria were on strike for six months.
I was oddjobing at Punch newspapers then, and i was opportuned to coordinate and direct an e-protest which simply is bombarding the email adresses of stakeholders on the educational sectors with mails to get our universites open at all cost.

At break time, i usually breeze into the newsroom ( i worked at the account section)to have series of chats with the journalists and to listen to various behind news and also unprintable news. I was fascinated by how much information the press controlled and they actually decide what they want us to know or not.
For example there was this particular day when a journalist attended a court sitting of a case between asuu and the federal Government, as soon as the presiding Judge came into the court premises, the journalist recounted that every member of the press inside were sent outside, which made the journalist furious. He got even when he painted the story with more props in the next edition of the paper.

Yet another day, the asuu chapter at the university of ife had filed a suit to bar the school authorities from releasing the result of final year student who were meant to go for nysc because they were on strike.
The asuu chieftains sent the suit to the press to recieve media attention, fortunately and unfortunately, the man who the release landed on his laps decided that the suit and its publicity would add more salt to injury and more petrol to the raging fire between the warring parties, so the HOT news ended in the trach can.

Several other experiences that time will not permit me to recount, since then i had respected and feared the man who knows, uses and controls the pen.
