The Gambian election holds today, and President Jammeh will once again be seeking re-election. President Jammeh came to power in 1994 in a bloodless military coup when he was a young army lieutenant. He overthrew a lame duck civilian government whom the citizen described an a non performer. But President Jammeh like 2/3rds of his colleagues sitting in presidential palaces across Africa wants to sit tight as president with nothing to show for it. This attitude of tenure elongation and re-election is spread throughout the continent including Nigeria, the heart of Africa, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe (suffering the highest inflation rate in the world) and a host of others.

Young people in Gambia have joined international observers to monitor todays election. Reports coming in says the election is peaceful but that the ruling party is displaying unecessary lilitary might on the street mainly to intimidate opponents.
