Lautech expels 7 students over unrest
|
In what looked like a return to the military era, the senate of the ladoke Akintola University of Technology expelled 7 students because of their roles in disrupting the final exams of the Pre Degree students of the institutions.
The Lautech SUG elections was cancelled amidst mass rigging, bickering and fighting and the students union requested for a fresh election. However, the university authorities said elections cannot hold due to exams that would start in a weeks time.
In protest, some ill-motivated students disrupted the final exams of pre degree students and the school went overboard.
17 students were invited to face a panel. 7 of these students were expelled. 4 out of these 7 being final year students of the institution.
It will be insensitive on my part not to condemn the unruly behavour of the students who disrupted exams, but it is also too drastic for the school to have expelled 7 students as a result of this little brouhaha.
It should be noted that Lautech has been one of the most peaceful universities in Nigeria which is as a result of a reasonable student body and an understanding school management. This understanding is falling apart at the seams and if it is not arrested, the situation will degenerate to what is happening in neighbouring institutions.
I am calling on the school management to embrace dialogue, recall the expelled students and ensure that peace returns to the already fragile environment on campus.
The time to act is NOW!

April Election scenarios: More than 600,000 students will be denied voting rights
|
Very recently (about three weeks ago), i was opportuned to attend a workshop on voter education and electoral mandate protection organised by the female leadership Forum.
In one of our discussions, someone raised the concern about the voting right of students in Nigeria tertiary institutions in the build up to the 2007 april elections.
As part of efforts to ensure that as many eligible people as possible register for the 2007 elections, students nationwide in tertiary institutions were compelled, cajoled and sometimes forced to do voters registration.
In the case of Ladoke Akintola University of technology in Ogbomoso, students were informed that NO Voters registration; NO examination. This forced more than 80% of the students to go and register for the elections.
Now to my dilemna.
Despite the fact that the Professor Iwu led INEC embarked on a computerised registration, i have been authoritatively informed that you cannot vote outside the cities where you registered. Meaning that if i register for the elections in ogbomoso and i am in Lagos during the elections and i happen to have a valid voters card, i am not eleigible to vote.
In other to forestall youth violence, it has been authoritatively rumored that no higher institution of learning in Nigeria will be in session during the elections, meaning that most students who registered for the elections will have returned to their various ststes, villages and home towns.
Considering the fact that we have more than 1 million young people in over 90 tertiary institutions, i believe that it is safe to assume that more than 60% (about 600,000) students will be denied their voting rights as a result of the inneffectiveness and the sloppiness of the Prof iwu led INEC.
We have cried hoarse as much as we can, and it seems that this situation might not be rectified at all.
It is a shame that more than 600,000 young people will be denied thier voting rights and nothing will be done.
Shame on Professor iwu
Shame on INEC
Shame Shame Shame

April Scenario: 2007 election result
|
Being a text from a press conference delivered by Professor Maurice Iwu.
Dear Nigerians,
I want to first of all thank all Nigerians for thier support in the last few weeks and most especially during the elections.
I want to specifically thank the government of nigeria, the security services, the members of the fourth estate, election observers and the political parties.
The 2007 election has marked a turning point in the history of nigeria, I have been able to with your support of course organise probably the freest nd fairest election in Nigeria if you decide to ignore the famous june 12 election.
I can authoritatively inform you that we only had few cases of massive riggings in Ibadan (which of course is expected) , Anambra state, Ekiti state and a few others. Other reported cases were very minimum.
To the election resuts, I want to announce that Messrs Yaradua and Goodluck jonathan won the Presidential elections, and that is all i can say for now. Atiku Abbakar's votes were stopped from being counted by a supreme court ruling.
Gen. Buhari, Mr. Orji Kalu, Prof utomi and Rev Okotie came 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th respectively.
I want all Nigerians to accept this results in goodfaith!
I promise to conduct a better lectio in 2011 if re-elected by Obasanjo (sorry) yaradua.
God Bless Nigeria
God bless PDP (and other parties)
God Bless me!

Who says New york is not like ajegunle
|
Last year, on one of my trips outside the contry, i visited New York City. I flew from abuja and arrived new york via London. I was in company of hauwa umar and we were on our way to attend the united nations youth leadership summit.
Amongst other things, our itinery had 2 free days and we decided to take a tour of NYC so as to be able to have a feel of the city.
the first day went smoothly. we were at the ground zero where tears sprung to my eyes as i witnessed physically the destruction that took place several years back. till date people are still laying flowers for the lives of innocent people that died at the 9/11 crash.
The second day, we travelled to brooklyn and had to use the subway. We were about using a lift when we discovered that the last lift user apparently defeacated in the lift. It was appalling, the stench was just too much. we had to abandon the lift for the stairs. We kept smiling as we made our way to our next destination.
I said to myself, it is not this bad in nigeria. So such things can happen in Holy new York city

Open Letter to st. valentine
|
Dear St. Valentine,
Its been a long time since you departed this world. It is rather unfortunate or can i say adds to your mystery that no one knows exactl when you were born or when you died or infact who you are.
According to the Catholic encyclopedia, the saint whose feast was celebrated on a day now known as st.valentine was possibly one of three martyred men.
1. A priest in rome
2. A bisop of interamna
3. A martyr in the Roman province of Africa.
It amuses me that you could have been an african or have lived in Africa. But thats not my point.
Whoever you are, whatever youlived for, people all over the world has turned February 14 into a global lover's day.
I picked up a copy of a Nigerian daily, and even corporate companies were falling over themselves to congratulate their customers one valentines day.
For me, you left behind a global movement of love which is probably lesson in leadership. For others, it is an opportunity to feel and share love towards others.
I honestly wish that people will share mor lovve with the rejected and downtrodden in our communities and countries on lover's day.
Love should go round on february 14 irregardless of your status, colour, age, sex or what have you.
Today, many young people all ove the world will step out of their shadows and give and share love.
Love is all that matters!
